4 Tips on how to install composite decking boards
1. Know your location regulations
You need to know what are your location requirements for setting up composite decking panel. Remember, you will be liable for any risks during the installation process.
2. Use a supporting frame
For better stability of the boards for decking, you need an outer supporting frame. The composite decking boards cannot stand alone and need to be attached to the frame.
3. Always use a chalk line
Ask your service person to draw a chalk line before setting up the boards. No matter how experienced you are, a chalk line will always serve as a guide for cutting and placing the planks.
4. Get custom-made boards

Getting pre-cut boards of the desired length will save a lot of your time. Also, you won’t have to worry about cutting machines and the mess. All you will have to do is place the boards for decking as per the design.
18 steps to install composite decking

1. Measuring
Start from measuring the decking to install the first decking plank. Getting right the first plank is the key to a symmetric decking installation.
2. Cutting the planks
Use a circular or a mitre saw to cut the planks for your desired length. Make sure that all the planks are identical in shape and size.
3. Making holes

You will need to cut a hole in the planks for allowing space for a downspout. See how many such pipes you have in your outdoor space. Plan your measurements accordingly. You can use a jigsaw for making a smooth hole.
4. Setting the plank
The next step would be to set the plank on the deck. For that, you can use a knife for slipping it beneath a metal surface.
5. Check for parallel surface

It’s important to measure whether the first plank is parallel to the deck or not. The entire decking boards will depend on the first plant. The outer edge of the deck needs to perfectly match the edge of the plank.
6. Fastening
Use decking screws to fasten the deck along the edge of the wall from where you are starting. For better results, put three screws, two at the extreme ends and one in the middle. This will add stability to the plank.
7. Install a fastener
The fastener adds more stability to the plank. And it’s hidden, it won’t spoil the look of your plank. Put two fasteners, one at each end.
8. Adjust the fasteners
Fastener spikes can be dangerous if left as it is. You need to drive them inside the plank edge to make sure that they don’t hurt anyone. To drive, you can use a plastic block or a light hammer.
9. Screw the fasteners

You need to screw the fasteners with the joists. For that, you can use a drill tool or a driver to lock the fasteners.
10. Put the second plank
Putting the second plank would require precision. Make sure that it’s cut to the same length as the first one. Then you can use the hidden fasteners to align it with the first one.
11. Driving the second plank
The second plank can be installed by fitting on the sharp fastener spikes from the first plank. The fitting would require either a tapping block or a sledgehammer. Be careful while hammering the second plank. The spikes need to fit perfectly for better results.
12. Lay the other planks
Repeat the same process for the other planks. Set the third plank alongside the second one, then the fourth alongside the third one and so on. Do this till you complete setting the entire deck.
13. Fit the outermost deck
When you finish setting the last board, notch it against a wall or a railing. This will provide the final structural support to the deck.
14. Installing the last plank
You won’t be needing more spikes after you install the final plank. Make sure that remove them from one side using end nippers.
15. Complete the last plank
Once you set the last plant perfectly, tighten it using decking screws. This will add more stability to the deck. The outermost decks are prone to damages. It’s therefore important to add additional strength to them.
16. Use chalk lines

To keep the boards for decking straight and in position, you need to draw chalk lines. These lines will serve as guides while you place the boards one by one.
17. Use a saw guide
The cutting of the planks has to be perfect. You can’t get a smooth deck with irregular boards. The cutting should be in a straight line. To ensure a perfect shape, screw a board with a straight edge onto the deck. It will serve as a guide when you saw the planks.
18. Use a circular saw
To get straight edges, use a circular saw. The guide board will help you to trim the planks as per your desired length.
