How composite decking is made?

Composite decking is made through the co-extrusion process. A mixture of raw materials (wood and plastic) is put into the extruder. The mixture is then forced through a die to form the desired shape.

Though composite boards are heavier than wood, they are resistant to rot and scratches. As such, it becomes a great option for your home’s exterior.

Two major techniques of making composite decking

The Extrusion technique

This process of extrusion is known as forming. Along with the mixture of wood and plastic, some colours are also added as per the requirement.

Also, some additives are poured into the mixtures. These additives impart decay resistance to the boards for decking. Once the final mixture is prepared, it is then forced into the die through a tooling shape.

After that, the boards are cooled using water and then cut to the desired lengths.

The Compression moulding technique

This technique is slightly different from extrusion. In this, the mixture is poured into a wood grain mould. Then it is put under high pressure and then cooled slowly.

Extreme pressures create a physical transformation. Once the deck gets the desired shape and length, it is imprinted to form a natural wood finish.

Two versions of composite decking

Uncapped

The uncapped versions are the old ones. They are not as strong as the capped versions. They are also not resistant to fades and stains.

Also, they are vulnerable to moulds and dew.

Capped

The capped versions got their name from the “capping” they have on all the sides. This enhances the durability and quality of the composite decking.

What is composite decking made of?

composite decking

The primary components of composite decking are plastic and wood. These raw materials are usually sourced from recycling products and hence, the process of making composite decking is eco-friendly.

The recycled component in the boards for decking can be up to 90%. It is taken from both industrial and consumer waste. While the wood material can be extracted from wood chips, fibre and sawdust, the plastic material is sourced from recycled plastic products.

How long does composite boards last?

Usually, boards for decking lasts for around 25 years. And if you can maintain it properly, it can be used for 50 years.

Some companies even offer a warranty of 30 years. So, don’t worry about your deck board. Expect it to serve you for many years before you think of replacing it.

Though composite decking cost is slightly higher than traditional wooden boards, their long life makes them cost-effective buy.

Will my composite decking last without maintenance?

A combination of wood and plastic adds multiple properties to composite deck boards. The wood adds to its aesthetics while plastic makes it highly durable.

It is also resistant to insects and damage from weather. Also, its outer coating protects it from moulds and fungi. It is also resistant to UV radiations and hence does not fade easily.

What can damage your composite boards?

composite decking

Though composite decking is highly durable, it still damages under certain conditions. This will ruin your patio look. Also, it can damage your furniture.

If you want your outdoor furniture to last long, and your decking to remain safe, you need to follow expert guidelines. 3 major things that damage composite decking are mentioned below:

Moisture

Moisture is the major contributing factor towards the damage of wooden boards. While composite decking is much more resistant to moisture, it can still be damaged if it is in access.

Wooden portions of composite decking are more prone to moisture. Also, once the moisture seeps in through an opening, it can quickly spread to other parts of the deck.

This causes warping and cracking of the board. The damage further worsens if not dealt with quickly.

Moulds

The boards for decking are also resistant to moulds. It doesn’t allow space for them to grow. However, moulds can still grow somewhere near your board.

If you don’t regularly clean the debris on your patio, it can become a breeding ground for moulds. Also, spaces between your composite decks can become a source of moulds.

Eventually, it damages your deck over time.

Rust

Rust also doesn’t develop on the deck. However, if there is a metal structure near the decking boards, it can spread on it through them.

Do composite boards heat up?

Usually, composite decking is safe to walk on, even in summers. They don’t get heated. However, if they are exposed to the sunlight for a long, they might become warm.

If your tolerance level is low, then you can put a mat or a garden AstroTurf on the deck when you have to sit or do some activity.

Besides, installing a garden AstroTurf will serve you multiple benefits.

How to wash composite decking?

Do not apply pressure washing to your deck. It might ruin its surface. Composite boards are softer than wood and therefore, can flake off at high water pressure.

For cleaning purposes, resort to soft brushes and scrubs. Also, make sure that you dry the surface and leave no moisture on it.
